What is health insurance for?
November 30th, 2009Everyone needs health insurance but more importantly, everyone needs cheap health insurance that they can afford. That’s easier said than done though. Read on.
Health insurance by definition is simply something that covers medical expenses. It can also be used to cover disability and long term medical care.
Can you get away from health insurance being discussed today? It’s everywhere. On the TV news daily. On talk radio daily. If you do a internet search for “cheap health insurance”, you’ll see that there are millions of pages discussing the topic.
More than likely you have someone in your family that doesn’t even have health insurance. Everyone who drives on America’s roads is required to have some level of automobile insurance in case of an accident but health insurance is not required. Why?
Well, just as you are able to buy automobile insurance from any licensed company in the entire country, you should also be able to purchase cheap health insurance from any licensed health insurance insurance company regardless of what state they are based in. But currently, you can’t do that. And that fact is one of the reasons why health insurance is so expensive.
The “commerce clause” in the Constitution of the United States allows individuals as well as businesses to transact business across state lines. However, when it comes to health insurance, there are laws against that very thing.
Why is this so? Many reasons but first and foremost, someone stands to profit by having these laws in place. When in doubt, follow the money. Is it possible that major insurance companies lobby Congress to make sure that their best interests are looked after instead of the individuals best interests? Of course. Now I personally have nothing against companies making a profit. Capitalism is the American way. Yet, there has to be some common ground.
By changing these laws, competition would surely drive health insurance prices downward. It would be so much easier to buy cheap health insurance if you had fifty or a hundred choices instead of the few that are currently available. That’s the beauty of competition. It always drives prices downward. This is not necessarily bad for insurance competition either because by lowering the costs of health insurance and making it more affordable to buy a cheap health insurance policy, more people would be insured. In fact, the it’s likely that the only people who wouldn’t be insured are the people who just decide no to buy a policy.
The government will always provide a safety net for for those who truly need that kind of support. There will always be health insurance available for anyone in this great country. But, isn’t buying your own cheap health insurance policy the responsible thing to do? I think most people will agree that it is and by simply changing this one law, health insurance policy rates would begin to dramatically fall.
